ABOUT TAE KWON DO
Tae Kwon Do is a dynamic Korean martial
art that leverages on the longer reach of the legs to attack from further away. Kicking techniques, especially spinning
and jumping ones, characterize this unique style.
Tae Kwon Do is the most practiced martial art in
North America
and an official sport of the Summer Olympic Games.
Various aspects of this Korean martial
art will be offered as a daily class focus, including:
-
Poomse – Rank-specific
patterns (commonly called “forms”) of defensive techniques meant to teach students
balance in movement while building confidence.
Forms using weapons (such as the staff and sword) will be taught to advanced
students.
-
Hapkido – Rank-specific,
unarmed, self-defense techniques against grabs, holds, chokes, and armed attacks. Students are encouraged to work together
to reduce reaction time against a controlled attack, while smoothly applying escape
maneuvers.
-
Basics – Elementary stances (balances
postures), blocks, kicks, and strikes are reviewed to ensure that students are correctly
applying knowledge gained from poomse.
-
Breaking – Control and power are
demonstrated while students are allowed to break wooden boards using kicking and
striking techniques.
-
Sparring – Speed and reaction time
are developed so that students can apply basic kicking and striking techniques while
in a mobile stance. Focus pad and punching
bag drills are used to teach combinations.
Supervised, paired sparring bouts are offered so that students can apply learned
combinations, footwork, and timing.
Instruction will be offered in both point and Olympic-style sparring for interested
students.
